For all home improvement projects, power tools are an absolute necessity. There are some basic power tools such as jigsaw, circular saw, sander and router that are most commonly used. Circular saw is excellent for cutting down wood, especially sheet materials and plywood. Sander uses power for sanding, and hence saves incredible amount of drudgery and time. Jigsaw is used to cut patterns and holes in the panels, and routers can be used for various small projects that need making recesses and grooves. Various Power Tool Accessories Bit set is one of the most common power tool accessories, and includes bits of most common sizes to complete daily tasks. There is also a hex shank locking system that prevents the problems of spinning bits while working on the projects. The changes are easy and quick so that the job can be finished faster. Some of the most commonly used power tool accessories include alignment tools, drill and drill press accessories, bases, stands and supports, multifunction table, motor accessories, lathe accessories, jigs and fixtures, table saw accessories, pneumatic accessories, INCRA Miter gauges and reciprocating saw accessories.

    Lasting performance!
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I have owned this Skil drill for over five years and it still offers exceptional performance. Although the batteries don’t last as long as they used too, they still last long enough to get the job done when fully charged. Yrs ago, the batteries would keep thier charge in storage for weeks at a time, now I have to quick charge them once a week, or before a major project. I will probably give this drill to a relative, and purchase the new lighter weight 18v lith ion drill.

low price, fair drill, terrible batteries
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
Must echo what other reviewers said about the batteries. They don’t last well at all compared to other makers batteries. The drill is fair, though not really a professional tool, and a bit heavy for what it does. I got this in a set with a recip saw, circular saw, jigsaw, and this drill. Quality of all of the saws is better than the drill, and they are useful tools, but the batteries are terrible. Now I have to buy more batteries so that I can use the other tools. Usually I use a different drill though.

Great for home use and small projects
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I used the set (drill, saw, jig saw) at school helping with a project. Personally, I would not buy them for my own use, but I could see the value for home projects and DIYers. For the money, I would highly recommend them but if you get into more then home projects I would say go with something heavier duty.

This is an ok tool , the chuck is kind of crappy and it’s doubtful it will last .if the rest holds up replace it with a Jacobs key type [$32.00]I would use this drill for small jobs around the house, not on the job . But it’s cheap enough .I can remember paying $185.00 for a 1/4″ B&D drill when they were made in Maryland , 30 years later it still works fine ,just had to replace the cord.I’m sure the current crop of tools will have a short useful life.

    Great Drill……Two Batteries
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
I found this drill was the best deal around considering it came with two batteries. Its well built, and with 18 volts its powerful enough for just about any job asked of it. I have owned one now for some 7 years and it is still going strong. One thing I have noticed over the last year or so is that the batteries are not holding a charge quite as well as they once did. Certainly not is it a drain that is in any way unusual for batteries now this old, nor is it so bad that it in any way qualifies it as a liability for this fine drill. I highly recommend it…

This Skil 2887-05 18-volt cordless 2 speed 3/8 inch drill is an amazing buy. What a bargain, 2 batteries, battery charger, case, and then the drill. It is an absolutely wonderful product, especially with the power it has. I would reccomend this item to anyone!!

Looks good two batteries and charger included. Good deal? NO_NO_NO- the clutch in this thing is made of cheese. It started slipping on the 2nd job I did with it. Left me out in the field twiddling my thumbs.

I don’t know what possessed me to pick this one, but it was sure a waste of my money and my time!!!!

My DeWalt outperforms this in every way
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
I should have known better to buy a Skil brand tool. The first year it did pretty well but never had enough torque for my tastes. The batteries are complete crap. They won’t keep a charge for anything. Its heavier than it should be. My DeWalt 18-volt is so much better. Just spend a little more money and get a better product.

I have had this drill for over a year now. The batteries will not hold a charge when not in use. You must constantly keep them in the charger. Pay more and get a better brand. Very Very disappointed.

    Great Drill. Bad Batteries.
    Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I bought my Skil several years ago. I got an excellent year out of it, then Skil replaced the batteries at the end of its warranty. Then I got another great year out of it. Since then, I had to charge the batteries immediately before each use, and now they won’t charge at all.

Replacing the batteries costs as much as the new product.

So, it’s an excellent disposable drill, but not a long-term tool to add to a collection.

Skil (or a 3rd party) should sell replacement batteries.

I received this drill as a Christmas gift from my wife, I would have to say the best gift I received in 2008! There is power to spare. Easy to use and hold. The 2 batteries and how fast they recharge keeps me on task to get the job done quickly.

  14. Eric S. Olstad says:

    Great drill. Bad batteries.
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
This is an excellent drill, and an excellent drill package. You get the drill, 2 batteries, a charger, a laser level, a bit-measuring device and a case to put it all in.

The drill itself has forward and reverse operation as well as high-torque and high-speed modes. These are relatively standard features as far as cordless drills go. Also, there is no need for a chuck key. You just use the grip on the end. Again, standard.

The drill is powerful and comfortable to use.

Where this drill fails is the batteries. They are Nickel Cadmium (NiCd). NiCad batteries are an old technology that suffer from memory issues. They have been largely replaced by NiMH and LiIon batteries. Apparently Skil missed the memo. These batteries will not last you long. They have no shelf-life (meaning they discharge just by sitting there), and they don’t have very much energy density. They’re crap.

At around $50 per replacement battery, you might as well buy an entirely new drill when one of these batteries dies. In addition, Skil does not have a LiIon or NiMH option to replace these batteries with. So, go with another drill if you want something reliable.

EDIT: Skil has since released a Li-Ion compatible battery for this model (SC118B-LI). The Li-Ion batteries are $90 a piece and you need a new charger. So you have to fork over around $100 for the battery and charger kit, then another $90 if you want a spare so you don’t have to wait an hour for the battery to charge. What can one expect out of a charger that sells for $10 in the kit? Since Li-Ion batteries operate best in the 20-80% range (they don’t like to be discharged all the way and they don’t like to be charged all the way), you’re likely to burn through your Li-Ion batteries fairly quickly with a “dumb” charger and a “dumb” drill that was originally made for NiCd batteries. By that, I mean there needs to be logic circuits in the drill that cut the power to the battery before it drains it completely and circuits in the charger that cut power before it charges it too much. Otherwise, you’re not maximizing the life on your $90 batteries. Needless to say, it’s hard to justify the cost of upgrading this drill to Lithium when the lithium batteries cost more than the drill itself.

Since the time I originally wrote the review for this drill, my second NiCd battery no longer holds its charge and now my drill is worthless since I can’t justify upgrading it to lithium. I have since purchased a wonderful Milwaukee 12v Li-Ion impact drill with aforementioned logic circuits for preserving the battery. I cannot speak to Skil’s new line of Li-ion battery-powered drills with regard to logic circuits, but I can say that upgrading this Skil drill to Li-ion is probably a giant waste of money. Take that $[...] or $[...] and put it towards a native Li-ion drill and charger that know how to treat a good battery.

drill is good, batteries are pathetic
    Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I got this drill in a combo pack in Dec 2006 with the circular saw, reciprocating saw and light. The battery packs have pathetic life on the saws.

The battery packs also barely hold their charge after a year.

The drill is good. Personally I would now go for the Ryobi LiON or the Ryobi sets which can also be used with LiON batteries.

Unlike many cordless drills, the contacts in the drill and saws are easy to get to. So attaching an external 18V DC power source should be easy.

I might see if I can attach an external battery pack like I did with my Bosch Bulldog.

I just bought a townhouse. Anyone who owns their own place needs their own cordless drill/driver. I chose this one over the other brands for no particular reason. I like red. I was encouraged when the guys bringing in the new washer/dryer had this exact drill and it had obviously seen a lot of wear and tear. I figured if they thought it was good enough for work, it’s probably good enough for home!

I have now put up curtain rods on 7 windows and 2 glass doors, installed a washing machine, assembled a couple pieces of furniture, installed some closet rods and I forget what else. I’m tired but the drill is still on its first battery charge. I picked up the Skil 84-piece bit set to go with it and have had drills and bits for everything, including wonky do-it-yourself furniture (threw away the hex key, used the cordless drill and hex bits instead).

It seems like a really nice drill and the fact that it comes with 2 batteries is nice. Get this and a good drilling and driving set to go with it and you’ll be well on your way to do-it-yourselfville.

    Love It
    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Plenty of torque, battery carries a good charge and since it comes with a second battery, I simply switch out the batteries at the end of each use. The battery charger hanges nicely on wall making for easy change outs and unlike other bit storage grips I’ve used the one on this drill actually holds the bit securely when not in use.

I’m a very satisfied customer and this is well worth the price.

O.K. The looks might not be to your taste (mine either) but for the bucks, this is a fine drill.

Although some others said that charge life could be better, it comes with 2 batteries.

Hey! If you can’t finish the job with that much juice, its time to break out the corded drill.

    Enjoy

I am just using this for small projects, and is has been more than powerful for me. On several occasions I have used it all day long. I have built walls, garden boxes, and will be building a shelving system today. Keep in mind I do not use this every day, but it is light enough that it is comfortable to use all day long. I bought this based on the positive reviews on here, and can’t be happier with my purchase.

The Skil 2887-05(B2) 18-volt cordless drill is every bit as good as its Bosch counterpart, only much less expensive. Both are manufactured by Bosch in China, and the Skill sells for about half the price of the Bosch. Compare these two excellent cordless drills and decide!

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
The drill came before the delivery date given and it is more powerful and operational than other drills that I have used. One of the main reasons I bought this drill over Dewalt and Ryobi was that it came with 2 batteries. However, it has out performed both comprable drills.

    One Flaw to this Drill
    Rating:3 out of 5 stars
For the most part I like this drill. It is comfortable in my hand, has good balance, works great, and with the two batteries, very seldom do I have to wait for a battery to charge. There is one major complaint I have with this drill and it is the design of the battery packs. To change them out is a hassle. After any significant use, and a little bit of dust accumulates on them, they are sometimes quite difficult to remove from the drill. Compared to other stab type drill packs, these are a mojor downside. If you dont use the drill a ton, it is a great drill for the price. If you use it significantly, you may want to consider another drill.

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Very nice drill. Quite powerful and it feels sturdy and well-built. I have only used it a few times but so far I remain happy with my purchase.

The battery life seems to be a little short, but the manual says that it takes 3-4 cycles (charges) of the batteries to get them up to par, so I’m not worried.

Good buy, especially considering the price!

    Rating:5 out of 5 stars
When I first read other reviews before getting the Skil 2887-05, I was inclined to get a “top-of-the-line” model and would have subsequently spent a lot more. But I was favorably influenced by the reviews on this drill and decided it matched my around-the-house, light to medium workload needs. My choice was correct to get this drill. It is proving very easy to use with many excellent features as detailed in the product description. I am particularily impressed on the fast battery charge and more that sufficient drilling torque. I can state without hesitation, this drill can perform well beyond anything I will ever demand of it. Therefore, it was a great choice for me at a great price

I ordered the 18 volt Skill Drill & its companion 84 piece bits accessory on Sunday,(Father’s Day). Momentarily Amazon sent an email advise that the product was ship. Both products qualified for free shipping (which I choose to) and by Wednesday, I received it already. I did not expect such quick delivery. My review of the prodcut will come later but I feel oblige to mention an excellent service by Amazon.

I have this Drill for 1 year now and I am satisfied with its performance. The setting I like is HIgh Speed but it automatically switch to Torque Power for the needed help. That’s smart. The battery power is holding even if I don’t used it for extented time. I did not experienced battery power shortage. The spare battery is more than enough to transition.

I am dismayed and uncomfortable if it is time to change battery. To release/replace the battery, it needed to slide forward or backward the drill unit. It demands a strong grip to the large battery unit and it is challenging to change it. Would have been better if it followed the downward gravity instead of slide sideways.

I’ve done a lot of construction and have had the “luxury” I guess you could say, of using high-end, expensive tools. This one runs as well as any of them. Run it and run it, no burn smells, no kick backs, doesn’t lose power; the feel is as sturdy as they come and the operation is flawless. You want this drill!

I have never owed a Skill product, although I have owned several Black and Decker and Dewalt and no name cordless drills over the past 10 years. They have preformed well but my biggest complaints have been the operation of the keyless chuck and the lack of a second battery (except for big buck models). The chuck invariably (even Jacobs chucks) slips under load ruining the bit or the project. This drill seems to have a no name chuck but it offers a split chuck which allows you to twist one end of the chuck tightly against the other end fully securing the bit. In terms of torque, it has plenty to spare for tough (drilling into green wood) projects and has excellent balance and ‘feel/touch’ allowing very positive control of speed for spinning screws. Further, the compact size makes it fit into spaces my 19.1 volt could not fit into. I would say, with a charger and second battery and the overall ‘feel’ of the tool, that this should be a legitimate 150 dollar product. Well done indeed!

I bought the Skill 2887-03 as part of a combo set including the drill/driver, circular saw, reciprocating saw and jigsaw. Needless to say, I’ve been extremely pleased.

I put hardwood flooring on three floors (2000+ square feet) and used the set extensively. From cutting plywood for the subfloor and underlayment with the circular saw to making curved cuts in the hardwood with the jigsaw. The drill/driver was used to screw in over a thousand screws to secure the underlayment, drill numerous holes, stir paint, mix mortar for the tile, etc. And with two batteries, you’ll be able to have one charging always ready to go. The only corded tools I used for this project were my compound miter and jamb saw. Everything else was done with the cordless Skil combo set.

I was so pleased with the tools, I bought two more sets, one for myself and one for my dad for father’s day.

    Highly recommended.

I have been using this for about six months and have almost retired my 110v drill. With two batteries, I never get a break between jobs and this drill has power to spare. I have been putting up a wooden fence on top of a concrete block wall and this thing outperforms my expensive 110v B&D. After only three 3/8″ x 2 1/4″ deep holes in the concrete, the AC drill was getting hot. The Skil worked right through without a complaint. The Bosch masonry bit isn’t bad either. Additionally, I was drilling 1/2″ holes in redwood plate and 1/4″ holes in eighth inch metal strap as part of the masonry drilling. When drilling the metal and the bit first pokes through, the drill almost torques out of your hand. I did three battery changes for a day’s work. The batteries charge quickly but, as a hint, fully drain the battery before recharging and let it cool off before putting in the charger. This applies to all DC tool batteries. The on-board bit carrier isn’t much of a feature but its there if you need it. The drill is lighter than most DC tools costing much more, is well balanced and, at the highest torque setting will drive 3 1/2″ screws into studs without maxing the clutch.

I’ve been using supercheap 18-Volt drills (Power-Craft, Aerotec, etc.) that you can get on other sites for $30. After going through 3 of them, I finally decided to go with a name-brand. The difference in quality is unbelievable, and the price difference isn’t that significant when you factor in the extra battery. I’m sure that Skil doen’t even compare in quality to Dewalt, Milwalkie, and the other big “professional” names, but those names are twice as much, and for my purposes, this thing is perfect.
