Good value for the price

I had a black and decker hand mixer that broke after 18 years of use. I researched and the kitchen aid 5 speed ultra power was the best for the money. BE AWARE that it appears Kitchen Aid is phasing this model out for the the more expensive 7 speed model. The 7 speed model does not come with the dough hooks and you have to buy them separately for $14.99. I agree with other writers that this model is not speedy but it gets the job done!!! The dough hooks work fine on really really thick cookie dough. Will this work with bread dough? Yes if one is patient and takes their time a the slower speed. Also with bread dough I tend to use my hands towards the end of the process anyway. It does the job it was meant to do with really useful attachments that no other current model gives you for the price. I say buy it before they are gone (Bed Bath and Beyond is no longer stocking it)
Kitchen Aid Hand Mixer

We have been using a 30 plus year old West Bend hand mixer and, although it was still working fine, felt it was time to ‘upgrade’.
According to Consumers Report, the Kitchen Aid hand mixer was at the top of their ratings so that is what we ordered.
I made a basic apple cake with the Kitchen Aid mixer and had problems mixing butter and sugar…they didn’t mix well.
The problem is in the design of the beaters, I think. They are basic wire, thin, not flared as on our old West Bend model. I visited a department store and saw the Cuisinart hand mixer has the same thin wire beater design.
The Kitchen Aid hand mixer is being returned; back to using the 30 year old West Bend!
Nothing to write home about

I bought two of these for gifts 15 years ago. Both were used rather lightly. The one motor’s cooling fan broke inside. On the other the bearings scream when under no load. For the price they should be ‘heirloom quality’ and last a lifetime. In reality it’s a decent mixer but not quite worth the price.
An update: The loud one is behaving better after a cleaning and re-greasing. The fan is not available as a part so I glued it together and reinstalled it. From looking over these two mixers I can tell you IF YOU HAVE ONE OF THESE AND LOVE IT: Disassemble it very 10 years regardless of how hard it was used by taking a pick to the 4 plugs on the bottom revealing 4 screws. Remove them and the lower case and tighten the two motor screws and reassemble. Clean and re-grease with an appropriate plastic compatible grease if you are so inclined. Once these screws back out a little bit, the motor tips and allows the plastic cooling fan blades to hit their shroud. They dont like that
It is typical for American engineering to produce a product that will last forever if you correct one or two design flaws. The motor is ‘top shelf’. I have not suffered the broken beater socket (yet) so I can not speak to its solution.
Great Mixer

Easy to use, and the quietest mixer I’ve ever owned. Works great. I’ve had it for 5 years and it’s still going strong.
Powerful, helpful, and trendy!

Excellent hand mixer! At first, I was torn between getting the 5-speed, 7-speed, or the 9-speed. I was afraid that the 5-speed would not be as powerful as the latter two. However, I ended up going with the 5-speed as a trial and because it was much cheaper! Needless to say, the 5-speed has done the job! I hardly ever go up to the top 2 speeds anyway and my baking and cooking has become much faster and more efficient with this hand mixer! There are 3 different types of attachments: the regular whisk-like ones as pictured, a cork-screw looking attachment for mixing thicker ingredients such as dough, and a stick attachment for smoothies. All attachments work great and are very easy to clean. I would highly recommend this item! The Kitchenaid brand is reliable and it compliments other Kitchenaid items in my kitchen!
I’ve had mine for fifteen years and it’s still going strong

I can’t believe the bad reviews for this mixer. Mine was purchased in November 1993 and has been one of the most reliable small appliances I have ever owned. Those of you who are griping about making chocolate chip cookies with a hand mixer are cretins. Either go easy and use a slower speed or shake out a few more shekels for a stand mixer and quit complaining.
Wimpy

I assumed that because it was a KitchenAid it was a quality appliance. WRONG, this thing can barely handle cake batter, anything heavier and it bogs down. The high speed is really not very fast even with no load so whipping is slow. My $25 Hamilton Beach runs circles around this mixer.

Warning about this mixer. I bought a cheap mixer about 2 years ago.Idid not expect it to last long, but it worked for about 2years.I thought I would buy a top of the line next and bought a Kitchen Aide.About the Third time my wife used it the switch had to be mashed three time or to come on. That lasted about two months and it finally quit.Check Amazons rating on this one and buy a different brand.
Junk! Beater broke apart while beating frosting.
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
Before this mixer I had a hand mixer I bought for $10 at Walmart and had it for 8 years, never a problem. I paid over $50.00 for this 13 months ago and at first the beater seemed loose but I didn’t think much of it then while mixing frosting the metal prongs on one of the beaters all detached at the same time leaving me with only one side operational to finish my daughter’s cupcakes for school. I have never been more unhappy with a product in my life. It is a complete waste of money. The speed is very slow and every once in awhile it just pauses for no reason. Garbage, don’t waste your money.

I am buying this product for a gift for the 3rd time! It is a must have, I recieved one as a wedding gift 13yrs ago, and everyone close to me that marries gets one! I make cakes and also cook for a large family and this mixer can do it ALL!! I never use my large kitchen-aid mixer, I think the hand held is better and less mess! I highly recommend this mixer- and this price is half of the same thing in stores.

Its a Hand mixer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
Alright, i’ve had this hand mixer for two days now (did research for 3 weeks). I truly don’t understand most of these poor reviews. I have already made a two layer cake with home made frosting using this product. I was able to basically kneed the frosting using the hand mixer with ease. I was probably using it for about 10 minutes and my arm felt fine during and after words. The product is very light weight, yet the motor is plenty efficient. Speed 5 is not very fast, but honestly, i probably wouldn’t want it to go any faster. I hear some people having problems with speed 1 being the same as speed 5. Heres the thing, this product is smarter than a 1950’s hand mixer. Instead of burning out the motor because your an idiot using speed 5 with cookie dough, it’ll self protect and stay lower. The instruction manual clearly states which speed to use with which item you are baking. If you go above that, well then you should expect problems. Heres the difference between this, and my hand mixer from 1978. The 1978 hand mixer smells like burning rubber when on, the beaters are not turbo beaters, so they constantly clog (the turbo beaters are great). The 78 HM also is loud and the handle is extremely poorly placed. The kitchen aid hand mixer is much quieter (while not being silent of course), and the handle is specifically made to ease the stress on your arm and wrist.
Kitchenaid has gotten a few poor reviews on this product, but what you really have to realize, is how many thousands others have the product, use it weekly, and never have a problem. Kitchenaid is still the choice of pros, and 10, 15 years down the road, when you either have kids old enough to use one, or maybe you’ll have grand kids, this little pup will still be beating away for you. I hope i was helpful to at least one person, in the long run, i think its the wiser choice.
other notes: If there is any confusion as to if the dough hooks and shake blender are included, yes they are. I havn’t yet used them, but if you look them up, each are around 16-20 dollars a piece, and come free with this product. I’ve also heard the dough hooks are amazing. Baking bread will never be the same.
I never thought I could love an appliance this much

But it’s true!
My husband bought me the KitchenAid 5 speed hand mixer for Christmas five years ago. I had wanted and yearned for a KitchenAid stand mixer.
However, the handmixer was all we could afford.
Now? You couldn’t GIVE me your stand mixer I love this hand mixer so much.
It beats with ease and speed everything from heavy whipping cream to thick cookie and bread dough. The beaters snap in and out with ease. The cord is long enough for great mobility. And the power on this thing! You can feel it adapting to give more “oomph” when the dough starts to get harder to mix.
I love it and when (IF!) it ever dies, I’ll be a KitchenAid hand mixer purchaser again.
Mixing it up!

The kitchenaid Mixer really does the job it is intended to do. It is powerful and sturdy, easy to put together and easy to clean.
junk

I bought this mixer after checking consumer reports web site. Sounded like it would be quality – WRONG! Never had enough power, and after it was only used 3 times one of the beaters broke. Feel like I just wadded up a $50 bill and threw it in the trash!.
Horrible mixer
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
This is the first review I’ve ever written, but I felt strongly enough about this mixer to speak up! It’s very disappointing. I used it once for a soft chocolate chip cookie dough. Even on speed 5 (which isn’t much different than speed 1) it’s pretty weak, and one of the prongs of one beater broke. Even before the beater broke, something about the design made dough splatter outside of the bowl, which is something I never experienced with other hand-held mixers. I used to make cookies all the time with my old mixer and never had a problem. I’ll be returning this.
Very disappointing
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
I purchased the Kitchen-Aid hand mixer based on a great experience with an earlier model purchased many years ago, but this one was an extreme disappointment. Instead of a sturdy mixer with lots of horsepower, I ended up with a light-weight plastic casing and thin beaters. My test for a hand mixer is the standard – chocolate chip cookie dough… and this mixer in no way held up. An email to the company asking why they had “downsized” a much less robust appliance gave a less than satisfactory response. There must be a more hardy hand mixer out there, so keep looking.
Mixer is a dud
Rating:2 out of 5 stars
I purchased this item because I thought the name KitchenAid would automatically mean quality. Boy, was I wrong. I, like the other folks who have tried to make mashed potatoes with this mixer have been extremely disappointed. They always come out lumpy. Always. I don’t know if it is because the mixer lacks power or if it is because the beaters don’t have the metal rod going down the center of the beater. Something just doesn’t cut it. I have to say, I love my KitchenAid stand mixer, but I don’t like this hand-held mixer at all.
useless
Rating:1 out of 5 stars
no power – infact they don’t even list the wattage info on the box
the locking mechanism somehow conked out in less than a yr so practically useless – & total waste
loose beater
Rating:4 out of 5 stars
i have owned this modle fr a few years and bake frequently. my only complaint with the mixer was the left beater would no longer stay in the mixer–the locking mechanism failed and i could not get that repaired. what a shame to spend $40 plus for a new mixer just because the beater won’t stay in……
Low Power No Power
Rating:3 out of 5 stars
You would think with the name of KitchenAid this would be a well performing mixer.Wrong.There is hardly a difference between low speed and high when mixing.I have used this to make mashed potatoes and from that experience would not even try to mix a heavier cookie dough.
I have an old GE 3 speed hand mixer that’s heads above this.
Karen Loves Mixer
Rating:5 out of 5 stars
bought this for my wife.item comes with dough hooks, whisk, and beaters. we thought it would be great in motor home, but karen uses it for everything. yes, she has a large kitchen aid and huge cusinart, but still uses this mixer. i even made pizza dough with it and motor in mixer just gobbles away without a whimper. nice to hold, long cord, rebate: what else do you need? buy it.
